RSS Feeds
RSS Feeds are used to be alerted when new content is added to a website. This allows you to know when there is more material to read without manually checking. Like receiving email, you can receive notification on new articles posted and even read them right in your feed reader.
RSS Feeds Defined
Without getting too technical, RSS is a standard that other programs use to retrieve information from a website. Currently, you are most likely using a web browser to read this page. There are other ways to deliver content from CBC’s website to you. An RSS Feed reader is widely used to retrieve regularly changing content.
How to Find Feeds on our Website
RSS Feeds can be identified as orange icons that are next to clickable links. Various feeds are at different locations on the website.
- Feeds for the entire website (all posts in all categories, all comments) are located at the bottom of every page.
- Feeds for comments on a single entry as well as the entry’s category can be found towards the bottom of the entry page.
Once you find a feed that you want to subscribe to, click on it. It doesn’t matter what page you see, you want to copy the URL out of your address bar.
How to Subscribe to our RSS Feeds
For all of the RSS feeds I subscribe to (and it’s a lot), I use Mozilla Thunderbird because it’s the program that I can use to read both my email and feeds. There are plenty of other feed readers out there as well, but I recommend that you download Mozilla Thunderbird and follow their instructions to use it to subscribe to our RSS feeds.
